In 1912, John Ringling, the creator of “The Greatest Show on Earth” purchased 20 acres of waterfront land in Sarasota, Florida. He not only built a lavish estate, Ca d’Zan Mansion, he also collected books and art, the beginning of what was to become The Ringling Art Library. The estate then grew to include the first “Circus Museum”, and then a 16th century theater from Italy was purchased and brought to the grounds which would come to be known as the Historic Aslo Theater.
Today, Florida State University maintains the four buildings on The Ringling Estate. Tourists flock to this extravagant estate, taking in the artistic culture and historical architecture left behind by John Ringling.
